Love at First Sight

Before my first date with my current boyfriend, I didn’t know what to expect.  We’d met online and exchanged a limited number of messages before we decided to meet in person.  Even then, I only had one photo of him and a vague understanding of what he did for a living.  Therefore, my expectations were low, as I had played this first date game too many times before.

I dressed accordingly in a black Club Monaco crewneck sweater and black leather leggings, not even bothering with heels because I had scheduled a massage directly beforehand and there was no way I was going to shatter that post-spa bliss with the pain of cramped toes for someone I did not even know.  I don’t think I even put on lipstick, honestly.  Well, he and I ended up talking for three hours over tea, and I had never felt so comfortable in my own skin, let alone the clothes I was in.

At this time of year, I’m sure you’ve seen the numerous articles published in fashion magazines and blogs about Valentine’s Day and date night dressing, perhaps even about what to wear on first dates.  You should strive to look pretty and feminine, but not like you tried too hard, say some articles.  Wear a flirty skirt or a V-neck top, depending on where your assets lie, say others.  And of course, the universal dictum to always wear heels.  However, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single article state this most obvious of statements: dress like yourself, and not the person you want your date to think you are.

A reflection of your personality

Just like you wouldn’t misrepresent yourself in any other social interaction in this day and age, why would you create a false impression from the start with your potential life partner?  By wearing an outfit you are comfortable in, not only will you be more honest with your date, but your personal comfort will translate into a positive, confident energy that he or she will pick up on.  (However, if your date is an obvious dud, no matter what you wear will make a difference, and at that point, you may as well just enjoy yourself for what it’s worth.)

Clothing is a reflection of your personality, and one of the purposes of the all-important first date is to find out whether your date’s personality is compatible with yours.  What you wear is a visual clue as to what can be expected.  Why not just be upfront and not waste anyone’s time?  Don’t get me wrong – I do enjoy dressing up.  However, I do so in what makes me feel the most like myself.  As much as my boyfriend likes seeing me in a dress and heels, there are days when I just want to throw on a pair of simple black leggings.  It’s a good thing we determined early on that he’s fine with that.
